About David Choe:
David Choe is a prominent American painter, muralist, graffiti artist, and graphic novelist of Korean descent. He is known for his distinctive “dirty style” figure paintings that showcase raw and frenetic works, often combining themes of desire, degradation, and exaltation. Choe gained recognition in the art world for his unique approach to street art, particularly for his iconic bucktoothed whale, which he has been spray-painting on streets since his teenage years.
Aside from his street art, Choe’s artwork has been featured in various urban culture and entertainment contexts. Notably, he provided the cover art for the multi-platinum album “Collision Course” by Jay-Z and Linkin Park. His art has also been used to decorate the sets of films like “Juno” and “The Glass House.” Furthermore, Choe has painted murals for Facebook’s offices in Silicon Valley and, interestingly, chose to receive company stock instead of cash payment.
During the 2008 presidential race, Choe created a portrait of then-Senator Barack Obama for a grassroots street art campaign. The original portrait was later displayed in the White House.
